Laila Sbaiti -  soprano  

Biography

Dutch soprano Laila Sbaiti studied at the Conservatory of Amsterdam with Margreet Honig. She continued her studies at New Opera Academy in Amsterdam, where she earned her Master degree in June 2008.  Laila is currently tutored by Margreet Honig and Nelly Miricioiu.

With the Opera Academy Laila Sbaiti performed Zerlina in Don Giovanni by Mozart, Constance in Les dialogues des Carmélites by Poulenc, Laurette in Le docteur Miracle by Bizet and Susanna and Barbarina in Le Nozze di Figaro.


Opera Studio Netherlands invited her to join their concert at the Amsterdam Grachtenfestival and at the Uitmarkt, the opening of the theatrical season.  

During the Summer Academy of the Aix-en-Provence Festival Laila worked with a.o. Barbara Bonney and Graham Clark. She also participated in masterclasses and private lessons with Nelly Miricioiu, Ed Spanjaard, Lotfi Mansouri, Chris Nietveld, Ryland Davies, Graciela Araya, Udo Reinemann, Rudolf Jansen, Marco Canepa, and Noëlle Barke. 

Laila Sbaiti is first prize winner of the 2009 Cristina Deutekom Competition, as well as winner of the audience prize. 

Recently she sang the roles of la Princesse and le Rossignol in L’enfant et les sortileges by Ravel with the Limburg Symphony Orchestra conducted by Ed Spanjaard. Toneelgroep Amsterdam invited her to contribute to a new music-theatrical piece called Iphegenia, directed by Robert Woodruff. Jan Willem de Vriend and his Combattimento Consort accompanied Laila in a series of concerts. 

In the fall of 2009 she sang the title role of Montsalvatge’s Il Gato con Botas, an Opera Trionfo production, which toured the Dutch theaters.  
Laila Sbaiti sang Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem at the Haarlem Koorbiennale, Being a prize winner Laila received an invitation to do a recital concert at the 2009 Amsterdam Grachtenfestival, singing repertoire of Verdi and Bellini.  She made her recital debut in the US at Carnegie Hall, singing a gala concert, followed by concerts of Jeunes Ambassadeurs Lyriques in Montreal, Canada.
